India leads global AI adoption as enterprises embed intelligence across consumer operations
A Deloitte India-FICCI report highlights AI’s growing role in customer engagement, retail operations and supply chains, with intelligent technologies expected to drive innovation, resilience and long-term growth in India’s rapidly expanding consumer economy.
India has emerged as the global frontrunner in artificial intelligence (AI) adoption among the world's 15 leading economies, as businesses increasingly integrate the technology into core operations rather than limiting it to isolated productivity applications. The findings come from a new Deloitte India-FICCI report, Consumer Trends: IGNITEing Growth and Governance, which highlights AI's expanding influence across India's consumer economy.
According to the study, organisations are embedding AI into customer engagement, product development, demand forecasting and supply chain management to improve operational efficiency, accelerate innovation and deliver more personalised consumer experiences. The report notes that AI is becoming a strategic business capability rather than a standalone technology tool.
India's consumer economy is projected to reach nearly US$1.9 trillion by 2030, with the report suggesting that future growth will depend on businesses' ability to combine AI with resilient operations, connected commerce ecosystems and data-driven consumer insights.
AI reshapes retail and business operations
The report highlights that AI adoption has moved beyond traditional use cases such as chatbots and customer support. Retailers and FMCG companies are increasingly deploying AI across merchandising, pricing, inventory management and operational decision-making to improve responsiveness to changing consumer demand.
AI-powered demand forecasting is helping businesses reduce inventory shortages and excess stock, while intelligent planning is strengthening supply chain resilience. The report also points to the growing adoption of AI-assisted shopping experiences and emerging agentic commerce, where intelligent systems help consumers discover products, compare options and make purchasing decisions more efficiently.
As India's retail ecosystem evolves, the distinction between physical stores, e-commerce platforms and quick commerce services continues to narrow. Businesses are responding by building integrated commerce models supported by AI-driven automation and real-time analytics.
The study also identifies AI as a key enabler of business productivity, supporting faster decision-making, operational efficiency and enhanced customer engagement across multiple sectors.
Changing consumer behaviour fuels AI adoption
Deloitte attributes the rapid adoption of AI to evolving consumer expectations. Indian shoppers are becoming increasingly digital-first and expect convenience, speed, transparency and personalised experiences across shopping channels. AI-powered recommendations, creator-led platforms and digital discovery tools are influencing how consumers research and purchase products, prompting businesses to rethink their engagement strategies.
The report also highlights a growing preference for healthier and more transparent products. Nearly 74% of consumers review ingredient or nutritional information before making purchases, while 63% consider product formulations and ingredients during buying decisions. Additionally, 52% are willing to switch brands in search of better health and transparency standards.
Beyond customer-facing applications, AI is helping organisations redesign supply chains to withstand disruptions caused by demand fluctuations, geopolitical uncertainties and climate-related risks through intelligent forecasting and diversified sourcing strategies.
The report identifies AI as one of six major structural trends shaping India's consumer sector, alongside changing consumer behaviour, resilient supply chains, connected commerce ecosystems, stronger governance and sustainability practices, and the expanding global presence of Indian brands. Together, these trends are expected to define the next phase of growth for India's consumer economy.
