Developed by UIDAI, the new e-Aadhaar app will use AI and facial recognition to streamline updates, reduce identity fraud, and allow most textual and demographic changes digitally, while biometrics still require in-person visits
The Indian government is set to introduce a comprehensive e-Aadhaar mobile application by the end of 2025, aimed at simplifying the process of updating personal details linked to the Aadhaar identity card. Unlike the existing mAadhaar app, the new platform will allow citizens to modify key information such as name, residential address, and date of birth directly from their smartphones, significantly reducing the need to visit Aadhaar Seva Kendras in person.
AI and facial recognition to enhance security
Developed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), the upcoming e-Aadhaar app will leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and facial recognition technology to ensure secure, fast, and seamless digital services. Officials say this integration is expected to not only streamline verification processes but also minimize the risk of identity fraud, providing users with a safer and more reliable experience.
While biometric authentication, including fingerprint and iris scans, will still require in-person visits starting November, all textual and demographic updates can be managed digitally through the app, making routine updates quicker and more convenient.
Automated data fetching to reduce paperwork
To further simplify the update process, the e-Aadhaar app will be connected with verified government databases, enabling automatic retrieval of supporting documents. This includes records such as birth certificates, PAN cards, passports, driving licenses, and ration card details from the Public Distribution System (PDS). Even utility bill data, such as electricity bills, will be incorporated to reduce the burden of manual documentation.
Officials describe the app as a “one-stop solution” for Aadhaar-related updates, offering a highly streamlined alternative to the current paper-heavy, time-consuming processes. By consolidating multiple verification requirements within a single digital platform, the e-Aadhaar app aims to make government services more accessible, efficient, and user-friendly for all citizens.
UIDAI expects the launch of the e-Aadhaar app by the end of 2025, marking a significant step in India’s push toward digital governance and contactless service delivery.
