President Droupadi Murmu appointed Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the 50th Chief Justice of India (CJI). Justice Chandrachud will be taking the oath next month and the present CJI Justice Uday Umesh Lalit will quit on attaining the age of 65.
Law Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted: “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon’ble President appoints Dr. Justice DY Chandrachud, Judge, Supreme Court as the Chief Justice of India with effect from 9th November, 22.”
While Justice Lalit has a brief tenure of 74 days, Justice Chandrachud will serve as the CJI for two years, one of the longest terms for a CJI in the recent past. He is the son of former Supreme Court judge Y.V. Chandrachud who was the longest serving CJI for being in office for about seven years.
Before his appointment to the top court, Justice Chandrachud served as the Chief Justice of Allahabad High Court from 2013. He also served as a Judge of the Bombay High Court from 2000 to 2013.
Justice Chandrachud played a key role in introducing virtual hearings during the Covid time, which has now become a permanent feature. He has been part of the landmark judgments on Ayodhya title dispute, decriminalisation of homosexuality, adultery, privacy, entry of women into Sabarimala etc.
