The expanded digital facility enables eligible commuters living within 20 km of participating toll plazas to apply for monthly Local Passes online, using digital verification to eliminate physical paperwork and visits to toll booths.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has expanded its digital FASTag Local Pass service to 121 toll plazas across the country, allowing eligible residents to apply for monthly passes through the Rajmargyatra mobile app without visiting a toll plaza.
The initiative is aimed at simplifying the process for people who frequently travel through the same toll plaza. Under the scheme, eligible local commuters can obtain a monthly pass starting at Rs 350, subject to the applicable rules, and use it for repeated travel through the designated toll plaza during the validity period.
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways said the digital service is intended to make National Highway travel more convenient while reducing paperwork and manual intervention involved in issuing local passes.
The Local Pass is available to residents whose registered address falls within a 20-kilometre radius of a participating toll plaza. It is particularly relevant for people who regularly use a particular toll route for commuting to work, routine travel and other local journeys.
However, the digital facility is currently limited to 121 toll plazas. Commuters need to verify whether their preferred toll plaza is covered before beginning the application process.
DigiLocker, VAHAN and GIS used for eligibility
The online system uses consent-based integration with government digital platforms, including DigiLocker and VAHAN, to retrieve information required to assess an applicant's eligibility. This can include the applicant's residential address, vehicle information and details of the FASTag associated with the vehicle.
NHAI also uses GIS-based verification to determine whether the registered residential address is located within the prescribed 20-kilometre radius of the relevant toll plaza. The process is designed to reduce the need for applicants to provide physical documents or undergo manual address verification.
The government said the digital approach "eliminates the need for manual documentation and physical verification", with information being accessed from government databases after receiving the applicant's consent.
The facility was initially launched in July 2026 at the Mundka-Bakkarwala Toll Plaza on Delhi's Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). Following the initial implementation, NHAI expanded the service to more than 120 additional toll plazas, taking the total coverage to 121 locations.
The list of participating toll plazas can be checked through the Rajmargyatra portal before an application is submitted. NHAI is expected to extend the digital Local Pass facility to more toll plazas in the coming months.
The move is part of the government's broader push to digitise highway-related services and improve the experience for road users. By shifting eligibility checks and documentation online, NHAI aims to make Local Pass issuance faster, reduce physical interaction at toll plazas and provide a more consistent process for frequent local commuters.
For eligible users who regularly cross a participating toll plaza, the monthly pass starting at Rs 350 could also reduce the administrative burden associated with repeated toll travel.
