Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to inaugurate the OSAT (Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test) facility of Kaynes Semicon in Sanand, Gujarat, on March 31. This project is a significant part of India’s Semiconductor Mission. With a financial commitment of ₹3,300 crore, this endeavor aims to enhance the semiconductor ecosystem in the region significantly. The Prime Minister has indicated that the growth of the semiconductor industry in India will fundamentally transform the nation’s technological landscape over the next decade.
The establishment of Kaynes Semicon’s OSAT facility is expected to be a substantial contributor to the local economy, particularly following the recent inauguration of the Micron semiconductor plant. The new facility will be capable of producing an estimated 60 lakh chips daily. OSAT operations are crucial for testing and packaging semiconductors before they are made available in the market, thereby ensuring the efficiency and reliability of chip manufacturing.
Earlier in February, Prime Minister Modi also launched the Micron plant, highlighting the rapid development of semiconductor projects in India. He pointed out that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Micron facility was signed in June 2023, followed by the foundation stone being laid in September of the same year, with commercial production expected to commence by February 2026. The Prime Minister emphasized that while such rapid approvals and progress are uncommon in developed nations, India has achieved this impressive timeline in approximately 900 days. This achievement underscores the government’s commitment to swift national advancement and decisive policymaking.
