PM Modi to launch 5G services next month

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will officially launch 5G in India at India Mobile Congress (IMC) on October 1. The announcement was made by the government’s National Broadband Mission Twitter handle.

The IMC official website confirms that PM Modi will inaugurate the four-day event with his speech. However, telcos like Airtel, Vi, and Reliance Jio are yet to announce an official rollout date of their 5G services for customers.

The National Broadband Mission tweeted: “Taking India’s digital transformation & connectivity to new heights, Hon'ble PM, @narendramodi, will roll out 5G services in India; at India Mobile Congress; Asia's largest technology exhibition.”

Leading telecom companies including Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea will share more information about their 5G plans for the country in the four-day event inaugurated by PM Modi next month.

Earlier this month, Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that India is gearing up for the rollout of 5G services by October. The union minister also said that the services will reach more Indian cities and towns by the end of this year. The services will continue to expand next year.

Last month, Ashwani Vaishnaw had asked telcos to gear up for the 5G services launch post the issuance of spectrum allocation letters. The telecom minister tweeted: “Spectrum assignment letter issued. Requesting TSPs to prepare for 5G launch.”
