The Indian mobile device market today presents a crowded picture, with many different international and indigenous mobile manufacturers clamouring for the top position. Every other mobile manufacturer claims themselves to be the leader in this segment and is converting the Indian mobility segment into a war zone. Amidst this din, research agencies are failing to provide us with actual facts and figures. Different agencies are of different opinion on the leadership in the Indian market.

Earlier this week, a report on the market leadership by Hong Kong-based Counterpoint Technology has declared that in the April-June quarter Indian handset maker Micromax has climbed the top position, keeping behind the Korea-based mobile manufacturing company, Samsung. Another Indian research company said that Samsung is still in the leading position, but the gap between the second and first position has narrowed.

To find out who is the actual leader in this dynamic market, VARINDIA has conducted a survey in the retail mobile segment in the metros and Tier-II and -III cities. The survey was conducted on the basis of customer demand and actual sales in the respective areas.

The survey reveals that Samsung is followed by Micromax, which also proves the former's Channel preference over the continued quarter. Other brands including Karbonn, HTC, Apple, Sony and Lava also have a significant presence in the country. However, Samsung retains the top position with a double-digit growth and with a huge difference from its nearest competition.
