Sony’s latest super-telephoto lens combines a 100-400mm focal range with a lightweight 654-gram design, optical image stabilisation and fast autofocus, targeting wildlife photographers, travellers, sports shooters and content creators.
Sony India has expanded its full-frame Alpha E-mount lens portfolio with the launch of the FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS, a super-telephoto lens aimed at wildlife photographers, travellers and creators.
The new lens is designed to provide long-range shooting capabilities in a relatively compact and lightweight form factor. With a focal range of 100mm to 400mm, it allows photographers to frame distant subjects while maintaining portability for outdoor and travel photography.
At 654 grams and 165.5mm in length, the lens is positioned as a lightweight option in its category. It also supports optional teleconverters, enabling photographers to extend the focal length to as much as 800mm for subjects that are farther away.
Optical design focuses on clarity and close-up shooting
Sony has equipped the lens with two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements and two aspherical elements. The optical configuration is designed to maintain resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range, including toward the edges of the frame.
The lens features a nine-blade circular aperture, which is intended to produce smoother background blur and help separate subjects from their surroundings. This can be useful for wildlife, nature, portraits and other telephoto applications where background isolation is important.
For photographers looking to capture smaller subjects at closer distances, the lens provides a maximum magnification of 0.41x and a minimum focusing distance of 0.86 metres. These specifications allow users to frame details more tightly without needing to switch to a dedicated macro lens.
Fast autofocus and controls for outdoor use
The FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS uses dual linear motors for autofocus. Sony says the system is designed to provide fast, accurate and quiet focusing, particularly when tracking moving subjects such as birds, wildlife and athletes.
Optical image stabilisation is built into the lens to help minimise camera shake when shooting handheld at longer focal lengths. The feature is intended to support sharper images in situations where using a tripod may not be practical.
For field use, the lens includes several physical controls, including a focus hold button, focus mode and range switch, and a zoom lock switch. Its dust- and moisture-resistant construction is designed to provide additional protection during outdoor shooting in challenging conditions.
Recycled materials form part of the design
Sony has also incorporated recycled materials into the lens as part of its Road to Zero environmental initiative. More than 41% of the total plastic weight used in the lens comes from recycled materials.
The company said recycled content accounts for more than 32% of the plastic used in the lens barrel, over 89% in the lens hood and more than 88% in the lens caps. Sony is also moving towards recyclable, non-plastic packaging materials, including plant-based non-woven fabrics for product bags.
Price and availability
The Sony FE 100-400mm F5.6-8 OSS is priced at an MRP of ₹94,990 in India. It will be available from August 20, 2026, through Sony Centres, Alpha Flagship stores, authorised Sony dealers and major electronics retailers.
The lens will also be sold through major e-commerce platforms, including Amazon and Flipkart, giving consumers multiple options to purchase the new full-frame telephoto lens.
