Technology companies are increasingly using artificial intelligence to generate podcast-style summaries and personalised audio explainers, signalling a major shift in how users consume news, research, entertainment and educational content.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping digital content consumption, with AI-generated podcasts and audio summaries emerging as one of the latest trends among major technology companies. Platforms such as Spotify, Amazon and Google are now competing to offer AI-powered audio experiences that can summarise information, explain topics and personalise content for users.
The growing trend allows users to receive podcast-style explainers generated by AI instead of reading lengthy articles or manually searching for information online. Industry experts believe the shift reflects increasing demand for conversational and personalised information delivery across devices and services.
Among the earliest entrants in this category was Google NotebookLM, which introduced its Audio Overviews feature in 2024. The tool converts uploaded articles, notes, research papers and documents into conversational audio discussions presented by AI-generated hosts.
Google later expanded the feature to support more than 50 languages, including Hindi, Marathi, Urdu and Konkani, strengthening its accessibility for users across different regions.
Spotify and Amazon introduce AI audio tools
Spotify has now entered the space with Studio by Spotify Labs, an experimental desktop application designed to create AI-generated playlists, podcast summaries and daily audio briefings. The company said the system analyses user listening patterns across music, podcasts and audiobooks to generate personalised recommendations and spoken content.
Spotify Studio also integrates with calendars, notes, inboxes and web browsers, allowing users to generate customised audio experiences using information from multiple sources. For example, users can request AI-generated travel briefings containing itineraries, restaurant suggestions and podcast recommendations.
Meanwhile, Amazon has launched Alexa Podcasts for Alexa+ users in the United States. The feature allows users to generate short AI-powered podcast episodes on demand through voice prompts.
According to Amazon, the AI system gathers information from several publishers and media organisations before generating audio summaries using synthetic voices. Users can customise the topic, duration and direction of the episode before playback.
Different strategies in the AI audio race
Although all three platforms focus on AI-generated audio experiences, their approaches differ significantly.
Spotify is positioning its service around personalised entertainment and lifestyle integration, while Amazon’s Alexa Podcasts is focused on voice-assisted learning and quick information access. NotebookLM, on the other hand, remains more research-oriented, targeting users seeking document summaries and educational explainers.
Industry observers say the competition highlights how AI is evolving into a digital audio companion capable of simplifying information through conversational formats.
Apart from audio explainers, Google has also expanded NotebookLM with AI-generated slide decks and video overview tools, indicating that the broader market for AI-powered multimedia content is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years.
