Mark Zuckerberg, CEO, Facebook has said that all three social media services will unify and make a stand-alone app soon. He is planning to unify the underlying messaging infrastructure of its WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger services and incorporate end-to-end encryption to these apps, the New York Times reported on Friday.
The three services will however, continue as stand-alone apps. The company is still in the early stages of the work and plans to complete it by the end of this year or in early 2020, the report said. After the changes, a Facebook user, for instance, will be able to send an encrypted message to someone who has only a WhatsApp account.
Facebook is rebuilding the underlying infrastructure so that people who might use only one of Facebook’s properties could communicate with others within the company’s ecosystem. All of the apps will support end-to-end encryption as well. End-to-end encryption protects messages from being viewed by anyone except the participants in the conversation.
According to VARINDIA, Mark Zuckerberg feels threat from competition like Apple’s iMessage and Google’s messaging services.
