Gamers are being targeted by scammers using fake itch.io pages to spread malware.
Victims often receive messages from friends or unknown developers asking them to "test my game," leading them to seemingly legitimate websites that actually deliver harmful software instead of the promised game.
These fraudulent pages mimic trusted platforms, utilizing familiar designs and hosting on trusted services like Blogspot or Dropbox.
Once a user clicks on the download link, the malicious file executes silently, deploying a stealthy loader that prepares the system for further malware installation.
The loader performs various actions without alerting the user, such as hiding the PowerShell window and checking for signs of a real machine before downloading additional payloads.
Users are advised to be cautious of unexpected messages and verify links before clicking.
If you suspect your device has been infected, change your passwords from a different device, run a malware scan, and inform your friends not to click any links from your account.
Remember, scammers exploit community trust, so always verify before downloading.
