You no longer need to visit a store or exchange to buy a BSNL SIM card, as the state-owned telecom operator has now come up with the option to get the Subscriber Identity Module cards from ATMs-like vending machines, which were introduced at the recently-concluded IMC 2024 in New Delhi.
One can get SIM cards anytime using the BSNL Self Care app along with the vending machine. These special machines will be available at busy places like railway stations and airports, making it easier for customers to access them. The government-backed telecom company intends to increase its customer base fast with this new facility.
These machines will be particularly helpful for those who prefer not to visit a telecom office or exchange. Customers will have the flexibility to purchase a new SIM card using the BSNL Self Care app and the vending machine.
Furthermore, BSNL is gearing up to launch its 4G services nationwide and has already started testing for the next-generation 5G technology, which, as per Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, is expected to be rolled out by June 2025.
The company also demonstrated innovative technologies at the India Mobile Congress, including concepts like Intelligent Village and virtual reality, as well as addressing issues like unwanted spam calls through artificial intelligence.
Staging an inspiring comeback, BSNL showcased a new system that uses AI to identify and reduce spam calls at the event. They also demonstrated their calling and internet services using satellites. The company has teamed up with Viasat to augment satellite connectivity, which can be particularly important for the defence forces.
During a briefing to the Estimates Committee, BSNL officials assured the panel that improved service would be rolled out within six months. They presented plans to upgrade nearly 100,000 mobile towers to 4G, greatly expanding the existing count of 24,000 towers.
