OpenAI is reportedly working on its own X-like social network. The project is still in its early stages with CEO Sam Altman privately asking outsiders for feedback about the project. It’s however unclear if OpenAI’s plan is to release the social network as a separate app or integrate it into ChatGPT, which became the most downloaded app globally last month.
In March, OpenAI debuted its latest image-generation tool, the inspiration for the potential social media project.
OpenAI vs X
This move could intensify the rivalry between Altman and Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but parted ways in 2018. Their relationship has since soured, with Musk suing OpenAI for deviating from its original mission, while OpenAI countersued Musk for harassment and attempting to disrupt its transition to a for-profit model. A jury trial is scheduled for next year.
OpenAI's entry into social media may also place it in competition with Meta, which is working on its own AI-powered standalone service. Both companies aim to leverage user-generated content to train their AI models, raising the stakes in the generative AI space.
OpenAI also faces hefty competition in the fast-growing generative AI market, including from Musk’s xAI.
While the project is still in development, it reflects OpenAI's ambitions to expand its ecosystem and enhance its AI capabilities through increased user engagement and data acquisition.
