The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), has intensified its crackdown on non-compliant products available on major e-commerce platforms. A recent BIS probe led to search and seizure operations at multiple warehouses of Amazon India and Flipkart, focusing on products that lacked mandatory certifications.
BIS Raid and Seizure Details
The BIS probe was conducted at warehouse locations in Lucknow, Delhi, and Gurugram, uncovering several non-compliant products. At Amazon India's Lucknow warehouse alone, 215 toys and 24 hand blenders were seized for failing to meet BIS certification requirements. These products did not adhere to the safety and quality standards mandated by the Bureau of Indian Standards, raising concerns about consumer protection.
Amazon’s Policy Update
Following the BIS action, Amazon India has reaffirmed its commitment to regulatory compliance and consumer safety. The company has implemented an Amazon policy update, stating that it will remove non-compliant products from its platform to ensure a safe and certified product selection. Amazon has also announced stricter compliance measures to prevent uncertified goods from being listed and sold.
The BIS probe underscores the growing regulatory scrutiny over e-commerce platforms and their responsibility to ensure product compliance. As consumer awareness increases, Amazon India and other online retailers are expected to align more closely with the Bureau of Indian Standards’ regulations to maintain trust and credibility in the market.
This latest enforcement action signals a stricter stance on non-compliant products, prompting platforms like Amazon to enhance their internal monitoring systems. The Amazon policy update aims to prevent future violations and reassure customers about the quality and authenticity of products available for purchase.
As regulatory bodies continue to monitor the market, adherence to BIS certification will be crucial for e-commerce platforms to maintain their operations without legal hurdles. The BIS probe serves as a reminder of the importance of stringent compliance in India's evolving digital marketplace.
