Apple has reported held early-stage discussions with Intel and Samsung Electronics about manufacturing the main processors used in its devices.
As part of these preliminary talks, Apple executives have visited Samsung’s chip facility which is under development in Texas and also explored the possibility with Intel about enlisting the company's chipmaking services.
This would give Apple an alternative to its long-standing manufacturing partner, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. However, the company is said to have concerns about relying on non-TSMC technology, particularly around scale and reliability.
The discussions with both Intel and Samsung remain at early stage, and no orders have been placed so far.
Apple had previously flagged ongoing chip supply constraints during its latest earnings report. Then-CEO Tim Cook said iPhone sales during the quarter were affected by shortages of advanced processor chips, which power the devices.
The iPhone 17-family's chips are made on a variant of the same TSMC chip manufacturing technology as many leading AI chips.
